What to Do in the Town of Wakefield, Quebec

Wakefield Quebec View from the Covered Bridge, Wakefield's covered bridge, small towns near Ottawa

You’ll find many different activities and shops in Wakefield, beyond what is listed here. The highlight lists are already full of ideas; it’s impressive how much this little town has to offer. Most of the shops and activities are within walking distance as you wander down Chemin Riverside. Other adventurous spots are within mere minutes driving.

Activities & Outdoor Adventures

Visit the Covered Bridge

The iconic bridge is a must stop for photos and a quick stroll, but is also a fun watering hole to cool off in the river. Originally built in 1915, the bridge burned down in 1984. It was reconstructed as a pedestrian only bridge in 1998. It still has a few of its original pieces.

It is a great spot for a picnic near the water, or a day of swimming. People have been seen jumping off of the bridge into the water, but be mindful of your safety as always, and of others who may be floating underneath.

Rent Watercraft at Expeditions

This adventure centre not only sells equipment such as bikes, paddle boards and gear, they also rent watercrafts. Rentals for canoes, kayaks and paddle boards start at $45 for 3 hours, and can be rented by the full day, even week.

Conveniently located across the street from the Gatineau River, simply grab your rental and walk to the water.

Nearby Hikes

Wakefield is surrounded by greenery and areas for outdoor walks. It is also just North East of Gatineau park. The closest trail (Trail 52 & 53) can be accessed behind the Wakefield Mill. Parking at the trailhead is at P17 if you want to start at the beginning. Connect to Trail 57 and you can directly reach Brown Lake Cabin.

Float Down the Gatineau River

The details of this float have been a well-kept secret by locals. The standard float begins in Alcove, off of Chemin River. You’ll want a second vehicle parked near the Wakefield bridge, or in town – wherever you plan to finish your float. Be respectful of the Wakefield locals and do not crowd their private property or leave any sort of garbage. It’s a crowded area near the launch; come prepared and aim for an off time to begin.

Bring water floats for yourself and your friends, as well as rope if you’d like to be attached as a raft. The float took my friends and I about 2.5 hours, and has been known to be longer or shorter depending on the size of your raft, the weather and season.

Wakefield is full of surprises and points of history. Wander down the old train track that turns into the town sidewalk. Find the freshwater Wakefield spring off of (the road) Chemin de la Vallée.

Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa

Spacious rooms in various themes, boasting unique features such as exposed brick or a location in an old grain silo. Multiple packages are available for your stay, choose from included breakfast and use of the outdoor pool and hot tub, or add a 3-course meal at one of their renowned restaurants (I’ve heard only amazing reviews). Choose a package with a spa credit to use towards a massage, facial or pedicure, while enjoying the sounds of the nearby waterfalls. Spa packages also available. You can also host your wedding, corporate meetings or other events at the Mill.

Éco-Odyssée Water Maze

This unique experience consists of 60 intersections, spread out over 6KM in a marsh environment, full of wildlife. You can look for various clues to a mystery question, while navigating on a paddle boat, paddle board or canoe. Four different excursions available.

They have other adventures including a walking maze, bows and arrows, beaver observation and picnic areas.

Explore the Shops

What is a small town without quaint shops full of home décor, goods and accessories to be found? One of my favourites is Boutique Jamboree which has quality kitchen goods, a full selection of mugs, dishware, home accents and gifts. La Tortue de Wakefield also has gifts for your home, children’s toys, local preserves and other unique finds. Visit the Khewa Native Art Boutique for indigenous art and jewelry. La Confiserie Wakefield carries artisan chocolates and sweets such as gourmet fudge and preserves. Find antiques and rustic furniture at Boiserie du Ruisseau.

Morrison’s Quarry

Did you know you could bungee jump this close to Ottawa?! Once an active quarry, the area is now a famous scuba diving training ground, home of the Great Canadian Bungee, a zip line over the lagoon, and a picturesque swimming hole. The water is crystal clear, a perfect spot for a day of tanning and floating.

Ski at Edelweiss or Vorlage Hill

Edelweiss ski hill offers 20 trails of varying difficulty, and is only about 30 minutes from downtown Ottawa.

Ski Vorlage is even closer to the town of Wakefield, also just 30 minutes from Ottawa. It has 18 trails also varying in difficulty level. Both hills have a restaurant and available rentals.

Restaurants and Cafés

Café Pot-Au-Feu

A quaint restaurant with fresh homemade food. The restaurant building was once the Wakefield train station, and has a gorgeous view of the river from their patio.

Le Hibou Café

My go-to spot to eat in Wakefield, they have a spacious front patio overlooking the Gatineau River. They have a diverse menu, and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried; Buffalo Cauliflower, Bao Buns, Vietnamese Bowl, and Salad of the Day (it had chorizo, roasted peppers and goat cheese!)
