The Top Things to do in Carp, Ontario

Carp, the small town just west of Ottawa has everything you need to enjoy a day away from the city. It is an easy drive from Ottawa, yet you will immediately feel like you are somewhere completely different. You can feel the community pride as you walk along Carp road, and hit these must-stop locations.

Carp Custom Creamery

Easy to spot by the yellow building with red roof, and the long line ups during summer nights. Made daily in house, the creamery has 16 flavour options to choose from and is often switching it up. 40 different flavours to choose from in 1L take home tubs. Get there early if you want to ensure you get the flavour and even the cone you want! Soft serve, milkshakes and even dog cones are available. Plus, ice cream tacos... have you ever heard of a tastier idea? The options and quality are definitely worth a visit and the wait.

Ridge Rock Brewing Co

A relatively new brewery in the Ottawa area, Ridge Rock is one of my favourites. Not only is their beer fresh and the atmosphere fun and relaxed, but their food is delicious! Unlike other breweries, you don’t have to sacrifice quality food for quality brews. Pre-Covid they had loaded tacos with weekly taco Tuesday deals, and more recently I’ve enjoyed tasty wraps and unique appetizers. The new Honey Lavender ale is such a treat, crisp and subtle – I definitely recommend.

Alice’s Village Café

A hub in the Carp community, Alice’s is known for their tasty soups & sandwiches, breakfasts and desserts. Order the ‘Big Nasty’ and you won’t regret it! Open mic night is enjoyed by all on Thursday nights. You will often find locals enjoying the patio out front, complete with wooden tables and twinkly lights.

Patio currently open for breakfast and lunch, until 3pm Wednesday – Sunday. Freezer goods, baking and coffee available to go.

Diefenbunker Museum

Canada’s Cold War Museum is a four-story bunker where officials took shelter during the Cold War in the event of nuclear attacks. There is so much to learn about this time period and exhibitions to explore in the museum. They hold many annual events such as the ‘Incident in the Bunker’ around Halloween. Diefenbunker also hosts the world’s largest escape room!

They have re-opened and began group tours again on July 22. The museum operates as a non-profit, charitable museum. Due to Covid-19 related closures, they need support more than ever. Click here to donate, and remember that online reviews and shares help!

Carp Farmer’s Market

Open Saturdays from May until October, the Carp Farmer’s Market is a producer-only market that hosts over 40 local vendors. They are actually the largest producer-based farmer’s market in Eastern Ontario! From baked goods to fresh produce, hot food to preserves, snacks and drinks you’ll find all sorts of quality food at the market. They also have vendors selling home décor, sewn items, woodwork and jewelry.

Covid-19 protocol is currently in place. Order ahead if you know what you need, wear a mask and keep your distance. Market opens at 8:30am, with one entrance and exit – please follow the signs.

The market is the location of the annual Carp Fair. The fair is a BIG DEAL for locals. Taking place in September, the fair has typical games and rides, exhibits, food trucks, markets, and even a rodeo! If you’re a country-lover or in need of some farm style fun, you won’t want to miss this. They have concerts in the arena, and the line ups get more exciting each year. * Due to Covid-19, the Carp Fair is postponed until 2021 *

Cheshire Cat Pub

A traditional British pub with authentic food, drinks and décor. They host live music (outdoors) and have a beautiful wooden bar with antique accents, which has a historical feel even after the building renovations from a fire a few years ago. When the fire occurred, the pure sadness and fear of loss of this pub, verifies how this pub is a pillar in the community. They have a selection of local beer, a distinguished whiskey collection, and a British style menu that is raved about. Arguably the best fish and chips in Ottawa! They also support local suppliers whenever they can.

The Juke Joint Soul Kitchen

Southern inspired soul food that is fresh and prepared on site. Great menu options for seafood lovers as well as those who prefer chicken & waffles, a burger, or salad. They typically host open mic nights and local talent for the full NOLA vibe.

Currently open for patio guests (front and back patios!) and takeout. Closed Sunday & Monday.

Kin Vineyards

Vineyard and tasting room, Kin creates their own wine while nestled along the Carp Ridge, adjoined by Carp River.  This location means stunning views overlooking the valley as you enjoy your glass of wine. They currently have Food Truck Fridays and Sunday Supper Club events weekly. I highly recommend their Pinot Noir Rosé; light, fruity and not too sweet. Tastings also available.
