The Best of Manotick Village in Ottawa

Watson's Mill Manotick, Manotick Ottawa neighbourhood, small town Ottawa, Manotick museum

The village of Manotick is within the city of Ottawa, but has a small-town appeal all its own. It is a great day or afternoon trip, and since it isn’t that far of a drive even an errand or shorter stop is doable.

Start your day with a coffee…

692 Coffee and Bar

692 is nestled in one of the oldest remaining business locations in the town. The coffee shop has a clean yet cozy look, kind staff, tasty treats and some seriously good coffee. The local coffee brand used is Fluid Solar Roasted Coffee – a family-run completely off-grid business, roasting to perfection.

If you prefer an afternoon pick me up, the shop is also a bar! They house a number of different local brews to choose from.

Morning Owl Coffee

If you live in Ottawa you’re likely familiar with Morning Owl and one of their 7 (and counting) locations. They have hot and cold coffee options, as well as a rotating menu of paninis, salads and other treats. They have a passion for quality food and coffee.

Currently raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Until September 26, 2020 Morning Owl is donating portions of their Flat White, GF double chocolate cookie and cookie 4-pack.

Mimi’s Dairy Barn & Café

Mimi’s is most well known for their daily fresh doughnuts! They have scoops of ice cream and a drink selection. This cute barn-style window is a must visit in Manotick. The indulgent doughnuts are a hot commodity and often sell out early in the day. Get there in the morning or call and pre-order.

Discover local history…

Watson’s Mill

This museum and historic centre is full of information and reminders of Manotick’s roots. The 1860’s grist and flour mill was built by Moss Kent Dickinson and his partner Joseph Currier, the founders of the town. It is one of the few remaining 19th century operating grist mills in Canada, and the only industrial heritage sites within Ottawa.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by volunteers in historic clothing, and are free to wander the mill on your own. You can read about the milling process, the development of the building, the origins of the village and much more, even some ghostly tales! The outside of the mill is also a beautiful photo stop.

Wander across the street to the Watson’s Mill Bookstore. Find a selection of used books for a great price; $2 each book and 3 for $5!

Dickinson House

Across from the mill is the previous home of past mill owners, built by Moss Kent Dickinson. The building was originally a community building, housing a general store, mill offices and a post office before it became a home. Explore each room, filled with artifacts and antiques, staged as it would have looked when it was a residence. Feel immersed in the history and read about the previous families who lived there.

Both museums are free of charge, and they accept donations.

Browse some local shops…

Lasting Impressions Gifts

This home and gift shop sells everything from home accents and baby gifts, to jewelry, women’s fashion and preserves and sauces. I found a very unique gift (for myself, haha) here, a portable campfire! A little campfire in a tin container that you can even roast marshmallows over.

Mansfield's Shoes

Quality footwear with a small-town, local experience. The store is organized and it will not take you long to find stylish, comfortable footwear that you’ll want to take home. I purchased Viking sandals during my visit and they’re my new favourite sandal by far! The store is celebrating 30 years in business.

Mill Street Florist

Walking into this florist shop feels like walking into a spa! The front porch is beautifully set up, and the mix of music and aromas inside is relaxing. In addition to the floral arrangements, they have accents like vases, candles and plants.

Enjoy lunch or dinner…

Black Dog Bistro

Casual dining with a flair, the atmosphere is friendly and warm. It was busy during lunch on a Friday where I enjoyed the Mediterranean Chicken Pita. It was evident all ingredients were fresh and local. The staff raves about the loaded salads. Enjoy your meal on their spacious patio out front or back.

Tasty pub style food, great service and a relaxed environment. It’s filled with friendly locals which has to be a review all its own! The tavern has serious patio game; wrapping around the building plus a balcony.
